Health Canada Proposes Ban of TCEP in Certain Child Products

On 9 November, the Minister of Health Canada published a proposed TCEP ban under Schedule 2 to the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA). This proposed ban prohibit children product intended for children under 3 years of age that are made, in whole or in part, of polyurethane foam (PUF) that containing tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP, CAS No. 115-96-8). TCEP is a flame retardant additives used for the PUF foam and other materials.

The prohibition would include both products that a child under three years of age uses, such as toys, and products that an adult uses to care for a child under three years of age. The prohibition would not apply to PUF products for children three years of age and older. The regulation will take effect 6 months after publication in the Canada Gazette, Part II.
