ASTM PUBLISHED STANDARD METHOD FOR CHILDREN’S JEWELRY

On 9 November 2011, ASTM International announced the release of the new standard method ASTM F2923 - 11 ‘Standard Specification for Consumer Product Safety for Children’s Jewelry’. The standard establishes requirements and test methods for specified elements and certain mechanical hazards in children’s jewelry. The specified restricted substances include cadmium, lead, nickel and some other soluble heavy metals. The standard applies for jewelry for children under 12 years, and does not apply to toy jewelry, which has its appropriate regulatory rules.

Requirements for certain substance:
cadmium:For metal, plastics and polymers which are non-compliance of cadmium limit requirement, its dissolution of cadmium content need to meet certain limit requirements.

Lead: Total lead cannot exceed 100 ppm, excluding fabric, wood and other material.

Nickel: Nickel content in piercing jewelry must not exceed 0.2μg/cm2 / week, and nickel in other jewelry direct contact with the skin shall not exceed 0.5μg/cm2 /week.
Soluble heavy metals: the limit for antimony is 60 ppm, chromium is 60 ppm, arsenic is 25 ppm, mercury is 60 ppm, barium is 1000 ppm, selenium is 500 ppm, cadmium is 75 ppm.
