The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced on April 5th that nearly 650,000 imported products destined for stores in the first quarter of 2012 were seized by investigators at U.S. ports of entry. Working with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the CPSC identified the non-complying products between October 1 and December 31 of last year. The goods were found to be “in violation of U.S. safety rules or found to be unsafe,” stated the CPSC in a press release. More than 2,900 shipments from abroad were screened with use and abuse testing or an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer; 647,000 units of approximately 240 different products – from children’s products and toys to hair dryers and lamps – were discovered to be in violation of federally-mandated consumer product safety laws.
