Amendment: EN 71-3:2019 Safety of Toys – Part 3: Migration of Certain Elements

The amendment EN 71-3:2019 Safety of Toys – Part 3: Migration of Certain Elements was published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) on April 10, 2019. This amendment is expected to be announced in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) not later than October 2019.

Key points of the change:
1.Changes of several terms and definitions, list for reagents and apparatus;
2.Update on the limit value for chromium VI for material category III toy material; the new legal limit value is 0.053 mg/kg, effective from November 18, 2019;
3.Adjustment on the test methods for chromium VI;
4.Revision of dewaxing procedure, using isooctane instead of n-heptane, and the extraction time changes from 6 hours to 60 minutes;
5.More details about how to check the pH before and after migration;
6.Addition of Dimethyltin (DMT) to the list of organic tin compounds, amounting 11 kinds organic tin compounds;
7.Revision of the test method for organic tin.
